The NFL Super Bowl is the most important game in Pro football, and there is always a player that stands above the rest and receives the honors of Super Bowl MVP.
NFL history tells us that the MVP has always played for the winning team, with a single exception: 1971, at Superbowl V, when Linebacker Chuck Howley received the MVP honors as a player of the Cowboys.
If we talk about which position has been more awarded, the quarterbacks are leading with 22 awards, followed by running backs with 7 and wide receivers with 5 (two of those in the last four years). If we talk about teams, Cowboys players have got the prize 6 times, one more than the Steelers and the 49ers. Joe Montana is currently the leader of Superbowl MVP winners with 3 awards, followed by Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw and Tom Brady with 2 each.
The Pete Rozelle Trophy is awarded to the Super Bowl MVP, the name of the trophy is in honor of a former commissioner of the NFL and the first one was given to running back Ottis Anderson of the Giants at Superbowl XXV in 1991. The prize is sponsored by Cadillac, and so the winner receives a brand new automobile of their own choice.
16 Hall of famers have received the award across history, and the University of Georgia is the college who has produced the most Super Bowl MVP award winners, with 3: Jake Scott, Terrell Davis and Hines Ward.
The current Superbowl MVP winner is Eli Manning, who helped the New York Giants to defeat the Patriots, a team that was undefeated for the past 18 games previous to Superbowl XLII.
If Manning can lead the Giants once more to a second straight super bowl, then he will probably have enough merits to opt for a place at the NFL Hall of Fame.
